D r ‘Deji Ayoade was born in Lagos, Nigeria. He graduated from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 2005 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree (DVM). ‘Deji honed his story-telling skills by writing poems and scientific research papers. In 2007, he was awarded young scientist grant by the Professor Tielin Foundation, Netherlands for best Microbial research work in West Africa. Later, he presented findings at the Estonian University of Life Sciences, Tartu, Estonia.
In 2008, he received a graduate scholarship to the Heller Graduate School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University in Massachusetts. In 2009, he graduated from the Keller Graduate School of Management, Bethesda in Maryland. ‘Deji scholarly successes extend beyond scientific authorship. His book of poetry Selah! Selah! (Pause and Think) was published in 2009, and republished in 2012.
In 2011, he joined the U.S. Navy where his innovative microbial research was successfully adopted as a treatment regimen for service members struggling with the resistant infection both at home in U.S. and overseas. Later in 2014, he was awarded the Navy-Marine Achievement Medal by the Naval Medical Center San Diego, CA for groundbreaking research in operational medicine.
Before joining the military, ‘Deji spent over six years as a Practicing Veterinary Surgeon, Technical Consultant to a pharmaceutical company and International Public Health Specialist. In 2014, he commissioned into the United States Air Force. In 2015, he received a professional honor - Outstanding Officer Recognition by the General of Air Force Global Strike Command.
‘Deji volunteers his time with the American Red Cross building the Veterans History Project in the Cheyenne, WY area as well as International Services and Restoring Family Links programs. He also volunteers as a Math and Science tutor at the Destiny Christian Academy, teaching the middle school and high school students. In 2016, he was awarded Volunteer of the Year by Destiny Christian Academy for tutoring Maths and Sciences.
‘Deji is an avid soccer fan. He has been an active Arsenal F.C. supporter for over 20 years. He enjoys writing, reading, martial arts, traveling, listening to music and meditating. He and his wife Tolu have been married for more than 8 years, and they have two children. He is fluent in multiple languages to include KRIO and Yoruba.
